Auntie Jessie and the Elephant

Wirth Bros circus came to town just after the war.

Highett only began to grow in the mid 1950s when industry, and a big CSIRO centre, moved in, so there was plenty of open land for a circus to set itself up.

One day an elephant wandered. An elephant of sound mind and discerning taste. She made a beeline for Uncle Jack’s delicious market garden using Auntie Jessie’s rose garden as a short cut.

Cousin Charlie called the police. Auntie Jessie ran out shrieking.

Ten minutes later the circus people arrived to rescue their elephant from Aunt Jessie’s buggy whip. She thought it was a horse.
